The choice between prilled urea vs granular urea catches out more buyers than any other fertiliser specification. Both are 46% nitrogen. Both look similar in a bag. Yet they behave differently in storage, in spreading and in price.
How each one is made
The difference begins at the plant, not in the field.
Prilled urea is produced by spraying molten urea from the top of a tower. The droplets cool as they fall and solidify into small, near-spherical beads. Typical size runs from 1 to 2.4mm.
Granular urea is built up in layers. Seed particles pass repeatedly through a drum or fluidised bed while molten urea is sprayed onto them, growing each granule outward. Typical size runs from 2 to 4mm.
Consequently granular material is larger, denser and considerably harder.
Prilled urea vs granular urea: the practical differences
Four differences matter commercially.
Crushing strength. Granular urea resists breakage far better. Prills crumble more readily under handling, which produces dust and caking during long transit or repeated transfer.
Spreading width. Heavier granules fly further and more evenly from a spinning disc spreader. Prills are lighter and scatter unevenly beyond roughly 18 metres, which causes striping across a field.
Dissolution speed. Prills dissolve faster because of their smaller size and greater surface area relative to mass. That suits liquid mixing and foliar use.
Blending compatibility. Granular urea matches the particle size of DAP, MOP and other bulk blend components. Prills segregate in a blend, which means uneven nutrient distribution at application.
Which one should you buy?
Choose granular when you are broadcasting across large areas with mechanical spreaders, blending with other fertilisers, or shipping long distances with multiple handling points.
Choose prilled when you are dissolving it for fertigation or foliar spray, applying by hand or with simple equipment, or feeding an industrial process such as resin or adhesive manufacture.
For most bulk import buyers moving fertiliser-grade material across oceans, granular is the safer specification. It survives the journey.
The price difference
Granular usually carries a modest premium over prilled, reflecting the extra production step. However, the gap is not fixed.
Regional supply matters more. Chinese and some South Asian plants produce heavily prilled material, so prilled can trade cheaper where those origins dominate. Gulf and North African producers lean granular.
Therefore compare delivered cost by origin rather than assuming one grade is always cheaper. Current market levels are covered in our urea price forecast for 2026.
What to write into the contract
Naming the grade alone is not enough. Specify these parameters.
- Form: prilled or granular, stated explicitly
- Nitrogen content: minimum 46%
- Biuret: maximum 1.0% for agricultural use, tighter for foliar application
- Moisture: maximum 0.5%
- Particle size distribution, with a stated percentage within range
- Crushing strength, particularly for granular
- Anti-caking treatment, if required
Biuret deserves attention. It forms during production and damages foliage above roughly 0.3%, so foliar buyers need a tighter limit than the standard agricultural grade allows.
Above all, name these parameters in the payment instrument. A specification that lives only in email correspondence gives your bank no grounds to refuse documents.
A note on technical grade
Technical or industrial grade urea is a separate product from both. It carries much tighter contamination limits and serves resin, adhesive and diesel exhaust fluid production.
Agricultural material cannot substitute for it. If your end use is industrial, say so at enquiry stage rather than ordering fertiliser grade and hoping it passes.
