What DAP and MAP actually are
Diammonium phosphate and monoammonium phosphate are the two dominant phosphate fertilisers in international trade. Both are manufactured by reacting phosphoric acid with ammonia \u2014 DAP at a higher ammonia ratio, MAP at a lower one, which shifts the nitrogen content and the soil pH effect on application.
Neither exists as a raw mined commodity. Both are manufactured products, which is precisely why their price cannot be understood by looking at phosphate alone.
The three inputs that set the price
Phosphoric acid production requires sulphuric acid as a processing input. Consequently, when the sulphur market moves sharply, DAP and MAP producers feel it directly in their manufacturing cost \u2014 not as a side effect, but as a core input.
Why 2026 made this connection impossible to ignore
Granular sulphur moved from roughly $520 per tonne in February to an all-time high near $860 in June \u2014 a record that surpassed the previous 2008 peak. By August, Gulf producers were still posting between $865 and $1,000 per tonne.
That single input moved by well over 60% in six months. A phosphate producer buying sulphuric acid at that inflated cost has no realistic way to hold DAP pricing flat \u2014 the increase has to pass through somewhere in the chain.
Meanwhile, ammonia followed a similar pattern, since natural gas prices moved with the same Hormuz-related disruption that hit sulphur. Two of the three input costs spiked from the same underlying event.

What this means for a DAP buyer
Rather than asking a supplier for a single flat number, ask which of the three inputs is driving their current quote. A producer who can answer that question in detail is quoting from real cost knowledge. One who cannot is likely relaying a figure from somewhere else in a broker chain.
Above all, track sulphur and ammonia trends as leading indicators for where DAP pricing is headed, rather than waiting for a DAP quote to move first. By the time a producer reprices DAP, the input cost has usually already moved weeks earlier.
