EN590 vs Normal Diesel: 10ppm Sulphur Is the Difference

Buyers ask about EN590 vs normal diesel more than almost any other fuel question, and the confusion is understandable. Both are diesel. Both run the same engines. Yet one is a defined international standard you can contract against, and the other is whatever the local market happens to sell.

That distinction decides whether a cargo can be inspected, financed and accepted at discharge.

What EN 590 actually is

EN590 is the European standard for automotive diesel, published by CEN. It sets mandatory requirements and test methods for diesel sold across CEN member countries.

Critically for traders, it names the test method for every parameter. Density is not simply “around 830” — it is measured by EN ISO 3675 or EN ISO 12185, at 15°C, with stated limits. That is what makes the standard contractable.

“Normal diesel” has no such definition. In one market it means 500ppm sulphur gas oil. In another it means the same ultra-low-sulphur product EN590 describes. The phrase carries no enforceable meaning in a sale contract.

EN590 vs normal diesel: the parameters that differ

Five specifications separate EN 590 from unspecified diesel.

  • Sulphur: maximum 10 mg/kg. This is the defining figure, and it is why EN590 is called ultra-low-sulphur diesel. Regional grades commonly run at 50ppm, 500ppm or higher.
  • Cetane number: minimum 51, with a cetane index minimum of 46. Higher cetane means faster ignition and smoother combustion. Kerosene-heavy blends can fall to 35–45.
  • Density at 15°C: 820 to 845 kg/m³ historically. The 2025 edition lowered the summer minimum to 815 kg/m³ — more on that below.
  • FAME content: maximum 7.0% by volume. Biodiesel above that threshold is a different product with different cold-flow behaviour.
  • Cold filter plugging point: climate-dependent grades, seasonally specified. Winter and summer material are not interchangeable.

Sulphur is the parameter that matters most commercially. Modern engines with exhaust after-treatment systems require 10ppm material. Higher-sulphur fuel damages them, so a buyer supplying a modern fleet cannot substitute.

The 2025 revision most traders have missed

EN590:2025 superseded EN590:2022, and two changes matter for anyone contracting against the standard.

First, the minimum density for summer grades dropped from 820.0 to 815.0 kg/m³, according to the published CEN standard. A cargo testing at 817 kg/m³ therefore passes under the 2025 edition and fails under the older one.

Second, the revision introduced a particle-count requirement of 10,000 counts per millilitre for particles of 4 µm and above.

Consequently, naming “EN590” alone is no longer sufficient. Name the edition. A contract that says EN 590 without a year invites exactly the dispute it was meant to prevent.

What this means for your contract

Write these into the sale agreement, and mirror them in the payment instrument.

  • The standard and its edition — EN590:2025, not simply EN590
  • Sulphur maximum, stated in mg/kg
  • Cetane number minimum, with the test method named
  • Density range at 15°C and the seasonal grade required
  • FAME maximum, particularly where the destination restricts biodiesel content
  • Independent inspection at load port, named as a required document

A specification that appears only in email correspondence gives your bank no grounds to refuse documents. If the parameters are not in the credit, they are not enforceable.

A warning specific to this product

EN 590 is among the most heavily targeted products in commodity fraud. Unsolicited offers arrive daily, typically at prices several percent below benchmark, routed through a chain of intermediaries, none of whom has spoken to a refinery.

The economics give the game away. Real diesel is priced off published benchmarks, controlled by terminal title, and financed against inventory. Genuinely cheap barrels do not reach strangers by email.

Verification runs in both directions, and buyers new to fuel trade are often surprised by the seller’s side of it. A serious seller will ask for a bank comfort letter before committing time. On FOB tank-to-tank deals, they will also expect a tank storage receipt proving you have rented storage at the loading port. Neither request is an obstacle; both are how professionals filter out time-wasters.

Is EN590 better than normal diesel?

It is more tightly specified rather than simply better. EN 590 guarantees 10ppm sulphur and a minimum 51 cetane, which modern engines require. For older equipment in markets without emissions controls, a higher-sulphur grade may be perfectly adequate and cheaper.

Can EN590 be used in any diesel engine?
